BEACH: SURF RELIEF FESTIVAL AT WATERGATE BAY

UK charity Surf Relief have unveiled a packed schedule for this summer’s best day out on the beach: the
Surf Relief Festival at Watergate Bay, Cornwall, on Saturday 18th July.

The free beach festival combines a host of family activities with two exciting beach sports competitions
featuring the UK’s top professional surfers and surf lifesavers. To round off a perfect day, the sound of
pounding waves will give way to live music in the Sunset Sessions: a mini music festival right on the
beach.

Learning to surf part 1

To follow is a series of articles on learning to surf. Whilst there is no substitute for "water time" there are a few hints and tips that can help you on your journey to becoming a competant surfer.

The first in this series of articles is about preparation. That means your equipment, your fitness, your goals and your choice of location.

Whilst the water is there for you to have fun in and enjoy, you will get more out of a session if you have made some basic preparations.

Nixon First WTA
BOBBY MARTINEZ CLAIMS FIRST 2009 NIXON WTA WIN
 
ENCINITAS, CA – Bobby Martinez (USA) won the first stop of the 2009 Nixon WTA (Winner-Takes-All) at the Billabong Pro last week in Teahupoo, Tahiti. Martinez, currently ranked 7 in the WCT/ ASP ratings, beat out Josh Kerr (AUS), Dean Morrison (AUS) and Miky Picon (FRA) for taking off on the heaviest wave of the event. Wave conditions varied from small to medium throughout the week with Teahupoo resisting to show her true strength. None-the-less, in the final, Martinez was able to snag the heaviest barrel of the event solidifying both his overall win at the Billabong Pro as well as the award for Nixon’s WTA “Heaviest Wave” title and a custom watch valued at over $10,000 USD.
 
 
Gul night surf paddle board event

The Gul Night Surf on the 12th 13th and 14th of June will hold the first Stand up Paddleboard competition on the Pro surf tour; this is a great addition to the tour and will attract the top Stand Up paddle boarders in the UK. The event will be sponsored by Custard Point surfboards and will add an exciting dimension to the weekend. Stand up Paddle board has increased in popularity in the UK over that last few years and it is fantastic for the sport that it has been given a place in the prestigious UK Pro surf tour. The event will undoubtedly create a lot of interest and will bring some big crowds down to Fistral Beach Newquay.

Saltrock open

The UK Pro surf tour got off to a flying start with great weather and good surf conditions. Starting the day with a small but clean 1-2ft the waves built to a solid 3-4ft by the afternoon. Spectacular surfing from Lewis Clinton from Newquay helped him clinch the pro junior final. 2nd was Luis Eyre followed closely by Jayce Robinson and Toby Donachie.
