IMBITUBA, Santa Catarina (Saturday, June 27, 2009) – The opening day of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro has been greeted with clean four-to-six foot (2 metre) waves on offer this morning at Praia Vila, prompting event organizers to call competition on with Round 1 hitting the water at 8:15am.

Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro is the first event since the season opener to utilize the traditional format with every member of the ASP Top 45 competing from the opening round, and today’s action will feature some of the most dynamic Round 1 matches seen all year.

“We got clean, good looking left and righthand peaks coming through this morning in the four-to-six foot range,” Perry Hatchett, ASP Head Judge, said. “We’ll be starting Heat 1 at 8:15am and looking to complete the round by day’s end. It looks like there is plenty of opportunity for scores out there so we’re expecting a good day of competition.”

The Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro is a crucial event in the race for the 2009 ASP World Tour. Current ASP World No. 1 Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, has demonstrated extreme focus this season and will take on compatriot Kai Otton (AUS), 29, and wildcard Guilherme Ferreira (BRA) in Heat 8 of Round 1 today.

Kelly Slater (USA), 37, reigning nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 25, will look to salvage a shocking season while in Brazil. The Floridian will battle fellow American Tim Reyes (USA), 27, and Marlon Lipke (DEU), 25, in Round 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.

Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, former ASP World Junior Champion and current ASP World No. 5, will lead the Brazilian contingent of fellow ASP Dream Tour campaigner Heitor Alves (BRA), 27, wildcards Bernardo Miranda, Gustavo Fernandes and Ferreira, as well as replacement surfer Neco Padaratz in front of a ravenous hometown crowd in Imbituba.

When competition commences, ASP Dream Tour sophomore and current ASP World No. 6 Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21, will face 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Tim Boal (FRA), 25, and journeyman competitor Greg Emslie (ZAF), 32, in the opening heat of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
